Stigma Against People with Mental Disorders

Mental disorders suffer from a social stigma that deters potential employers from hiring people who suffer from these conditions.
Approximately one in five adults in the U.S. -- 47.6 million people -- experiences mental illness. In 1999, people with mental disorders had an employment rate of only 70 percent, compared to 85 percent of people with no such issues. People with psychotic disorders fared even worse, with only 37 percent employment rate. While the main reasons for these data are explained by factors like lower education levels and comorbidities, about 30% of the unemployment different goes unexplained -- and is assumedly the result of social stigma against mental disorders.
As mental disorders become more prevalent and common, it is critical to deal with the social stigma attached to them.
