Opioid Epidemic

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid epidemic, which claimed 130 lives every day in 2019. The epidemic's economic cost has largely been calculated by checking for the number of fatalities and their effect on the economy, but there is also the cost of nonfatal opioid misuse. According to some estimates, the cost of reduced productivity among opioid users reached $20.8 billion in 2015.

Although it isn't known how exactly the opioid epidemic affects workers, it is likely that opioid misuse has a negative impact on performance in and outside the workplace.
