First 1,000 Days

XPRIZEXPRIZE Posts: 193 admin
Malnutrition in urban and rural areas is preventing children reaching their full potential. Food systems can solve this problem if designed with nutrition in the first 1,000 days as a goal. Sustainable local supply chains are an important part of the solution.

What problems will be solved with this prize? What breakthroughs will solve these problems?
  • Malnutrition/undernutrition from in-utero to early childhood.
  • Risk of stunting and illness for children.
  • Lifelong health outcomes for mothers and children.

What are teams required to demonstrate? How long should they be given to do so? Write down your "winning team will" statement.
  • Children: More diverse diet in 1,000 days (assume health benefit). Understand healthy food.
  • Women: Know how to cook nutritious meals based on available products.
  • Sustainability in environment (i.e., production practices): Fostering local supply chains.
  • Sustainability in the future (i.e., without external funding): Prototype in 5 years.

Prize purse: How much and why? Will there be milestone prizes in addition to the grand prize?

Urban: $1 million
Rural: $1 million

What is the desired impact that this prize will have on people, our planet, and the sector/industry?
  • Greater understanding by parents on the importance of nutritious diet for child growth and development. Cooking distribution.
  • Increase quality of life and life expectancy for certain regions.
  • Lowering strain on health care systems.

After the prize is won, how will these solutions be deployed at scale? What barriers might exist, and what "impact activities" could we run during or after the prize?
  • Distribution across time/accessibility
  • Acceptance/mind shift
  • Affordability for specific context
  • Small garden box
  • Supplements
  • Biofortification
  • Diverse diets at home
  • Business models for making health food cheapter
  • Availability of nutritious food
  • Livestock management
  • Daycare/school meals
  • Community meals during periods of food insecurity

We would like to invite the community to analyze this prize idea from the perspective of six stakeholder groups:
    1. Finance and investment
    2. Culture and activism
    3. Community builders and connectors
    4. Multinational corporations
    5. Policymakers and regulators
    6. Entrepreneurs and innovators

When you put yourself in the shoes in one of these groups, how might this prize idea change? Are there things you would add, amplify, or modify?

Super important problem. I would be curious if XPRIZE could first map out who are the corporations and other influences dictating the current diet of a child in their first 1,000 days? Infant formula companies? Cultural knowledge passed down by grandmothers? Radio shows? This mapping would help narrow down how best to tackle this prize.
