XPRIZE, in partnership with IEEE, is proud to launch XPRIZE & IEEE Energizing the Future.

This community will begin by collaborating on a new prize design; an ambitious initiative that aims to drive breakthrough concepts towards new systems for the equitable and resilient generation, storage, transmission, and distribution of renewable energy. This project is a new phase in the longstanding partnership between XPRIZE and IEEE that has focused on equity and ethics in technology.

XPRIZE & IEEE Energizing the Future is an ambitious initiative that aims to create a competition that drives breakthrough concepts towards new methods and technologies for generating, storing, transmitting, and distributing energy that will drive toward an equitable, resilient, and clean energy future while overcoming the constraints of distance and time.

This project is an evolution of the relationship between XPRIZE and IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.

With support from IEEE experts, the design team will use multiple methodologies to assess the current landscape in order to ensure we design an energy prize that will elicit transformative, scalable new concepts for sustainable energy. We wish to realize the vision of providing green, reliable, and affordable energy that will be an engine for global poverty reduction, social progress, equity, enhanced resilience, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

The final product of this process of researching and discussions, the Prize Design, will provide the outline of what the winning team must accomplish to be awarded the prize. Join this online community of experts to get involved, and share your wisdom with the crowd!

The Challenge

Renewable energy generation is growing fast, but not fast enough to keep global temperatures from rising. As much as 3/4 of global greenhouse gas emissions come from energy generation and consumption, over 84% of which originates from fossil fuels.

Although demand for energy is on the rise, 770 million people still do not have access to electricity and over 2.6 billion do not have access to clean fuels for cooking. Small Island Developing States, among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts, increasingly suffer from threats to energy security. How can global society decarbonize while meeting growing energy demand and expanding access to clean energy?

The Goal

We are designing an XPRIZE that will drive breakthrough concepts towards new systems for the equitable and resilient generation, storage, transmission, and distribution of renewable energy.

The Prize Design will provide the outline of what the winning team must accomplish to be awarded the prize and define the parameters of the XPRIZE competition. It is audacious, yet achievable.

Your Role

The community is currently debating the challenges and opportunities associated with energy storage, distribution, and equity.

We invite you to join us and other experts from around the world to share your wisdom with the crowd and advise us on this prize design.

What’s in it for you

We know your time is precious, and we appreciate your participation and input. None of the other benefits below come close to the reward of knowing that you contributed to a truly transformative breakthrough.

We will regularly announce the most prolific community members to recognize their contributions. Participation allows you to:
  • Network with diverse stakeholders;
  • Brainstorm with top experts;
  • Promote your work; and
  • Earn discounts in the XPRIZE Shop.

All active community members will also be credited in the final prize design report.
